Microscope Buying Guide for Hospital Laboratories
How to choose a laboratory microscope: binocular vs trinocular, objectives, LED illumination, condenser and the features that matter for clinical work.
The microscope is the basic tool of a clinical laboratory — blood films, urine microscopy, stool examination, microbiology and histology all depend on it. A good laboratory microscope gives a clear, comfortable image for hours at a time.
Binocular, trinocular or monocular
- Binocular (two eyepieces): the standard for routine laboratory work, because it is far more comfortable over a long day.
- Trinocular (two eyepieces and a camera port): choose this if you want to attach a camera for teaching, reporting or record keeping.
- Monocular (one eyepiece): suitable only for occasional or student use.
Objectives and magnification
A clinical microscope normally has 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x objectives. The 100x objective is used with immersion oil for detail such as blood parasites and bacteria. With a 10x eyepiece, total magnification ranges from 40x to 1000x. Check that the objectives are parfocal, meaning the image stays roughly in focus when you change between them.
Illumination and optics
- LED illumination is bright, runs cool and lasts long, with no bulb to replace regularly. It is the usual choice today.
- Condenser: an Abbe condenser with an adjustable iris and a numerical aperture suitable for the 100x objective gives better contrast and resolution.
- Objective quality: achromatic objectives are common and good for routine work; plan objectives give a flatter image across the whole field for an extra cost.
Mechanical details
- A smooth mechanical stage with controls for moving the slide precisely.
- Coaxial coarse and fine focus that does not drift or slip.
- A stable, heavy base and a metal frame.
- An adjustable interpupillary distance and dioptre adjustment for different users.
Care
Cover the microscope when it is not in use, clean the lenses only with proper lens tissue, remove immersion oil from the 100x objective after every session, and keep it away from damp and dust.
