Hematology (CBC) Analyzer Buying Guide: 3-Part vs 5-Part
How to choose a hematology analyzer for your lab: 3-part vs 5-part differential, parameters, sample volume, reagents, maintenance and service.
A hematology analyzer, also called a CBC machine, counts and measures the cells in a blood sample — red cells, white cells and platelets — and reports values such as haemoglobin and haematocrit. Choosing between the common types comes down to the detail your laboratory needs and the number of samples it processes.
3-part vs 5-part differential
- 3-part analyzers separate white cells into three groups (lymphocytes, a middle group of mixed cells, and granulocytes). They suit clinics and smaller laboratories with a moderate workload, and cost less to buy and to run.
- 5-part analyzers separate white cells into five types — neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. They suit hospital laboratories and busy diagnostic centres that need a fuller picture from every sample.
Whichever you choose, an abnormal analyzer flag usually still needs a blood film checked under the microscope by a trained person.
What to check before you buy
- Parameters reported: ask for the full list, and whether histograms or scatter plots are shown.
- Throughput: samples per hour, and whether that fits your busiest hours.
- Sample volume and modes: some analyzers can run small samples, such as paediatric or capillary blood.
- Reagents: how many reagents the system uses, what they cost, and whether they are available locally.
- Quality control: built-in support for control materials and result tracking.
- Maintenance: how often it needs cleaning, what is automatic, and how much operator time that takes.
- Data: result storage, printing, and connection to laboratory software if you use it.
- Service: who services it in Pakistan, and how quickly spare parts arrive.
Daily care
Run controls at the start of each shift, follow the manufacturer's cleaning schedule, store reagents as instructed, and keep a log of controls, maintenance and faults. A hematology analyzer that is cleaned and checked regularly stays accurate for much longer.
