ICU Ventilator Buying Guide for Hospitals
What hospitals should check when buying an ICU ventilator: modes, patient types, monitoring, alarms, battery, consumables, training and service.
A ventilator supports or takes over a patient's breathing. It is life-support equipment, so the decision should involve your intensivists, anaesthetists and biomedical staff, not only purchasing. This guide lists what to compare; the clinical choice belongs to your medical team.
Start with the patient group
- Adult only, or adult and paediatric, or also neonatal? Confirm the machine and its circuits support the patients you treat.
- Invasive ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, or both?
- Fixed ICU unit, or a transport or emergency ventilator?
Ventilation modes and controls
Ask for the list of modes supported — for example volume control, pressure control, synchronised intermittent modes and pressure support — and which are standard and which are optional extras. Check that the settings your team uses are all available and clearly displayed.
Monitoring and alarms
- A clear screen showing pressures, volumes and waveforms.
- Adjustable alarms for pressure, volume, rate and oxygen concentration, with audible and visual alerts.
- Battery back-up and how long it lasts, because power interruptions happen.
Gas supply and humidification
- Does it need an external air compressor, or does it have its own turbine or compressor?
- How does it connect to your oxygen supply?
- Which humidifier and heating options are supported?
Running costs
Ask what the breathing circuits, filters, flow sensors and other consumables cost, and whether they are available in Pakistan. These recurring costs can matter as much as the purchase price.
Training and service
- Training for doctors, nurses and biomedical staff at installation.
- A named service provider, response time and a spare parts plan.
- A maintenance and calibration schedule written into the contract.
