Hospital beds affect patient comfort, nurse workload and infection control every day. The main choice is between manual, semi-electric and fully electric beds.

Types of bed

  • Manual (crank) beds: the back rest, knee rest and sometimes height are adjusted by hand cranks. Durable, low cost, and no electricity needed. Suitable for general wards and home care.
  • Semi-electric beds: some functions, usually the back rest and knee rest, are motorised, while others stay manual. A middle option for busier wards.
  • Fully electric beds: all positions, including height and tilt, are motorised and often controlled from a handset. Used in ICUs and for patients who need frequent repositioning.

Functions

Beds are described by their number of functions, such as back rest, knee rest, height adjustment and tilt. More functions give nurses more ways to position the patient and reduce lifting. Choose functions that match the care you give.

Construction and safety

  • Frame: heavy-duty powder-coated or stainless steel stands up to daily use and cleaning.
  • Side rails: strong, easy to lower, and fitted securely.
  • Castors: smooth rolling, with locks that hold the bed firmly.
  • Weight capacity: check the safe working load, and whether you need bariatric capacity.
  • Head and foot boards: removable ones help in emergencies and for cleaning.
  • Accessories: IV pole holders, drainage bag hooks and a mattress sized for the bed.

Infection control

Choose smooth, wipe-clean surfaces, and mattresses with waterproof covers that can be disinfected between patients.
