An electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG machine) records the electrical activity of the heart. It is used in clinics, emergency departments, cardiology, wards and pre-operative assessment.

Channels

The number of channels is how many ECG traces the machine records and prints at once. Single-channel machines are the simplest. Three- and six-channel machines print more leads on each page, and 12-channel machines print all twelve standard leads together, which is easier to read and compare. Most hospitals and cardiology services prefer a 12-lead machine.

What to check

  • Leads: confirm it records the standard 12 leads, with a clear display so staff can check the trace before printing.
  • Printing: thermal printers are common. Check the paper width and how easy it is to buy the paper locally.
  • Interpretation: some machines give an automatic measurement and interpretation. This is a support for the doctor, who makes the final reading.
  • Filters: options for reducing muscle and mains interference give cleaner traces.
  • Battery: useful for ward rounds and when the power is unreliable.
  • Storage and transfer: internal memory or USB, and whether records can be exported to a computer.
  • Accessories: patient cable, limb clips, chest electrodes and gel; check availability and cost.
  • Build: a rugged, easy-to-clean body, especially if it will be moved between wards.
